From McCain '08, "Broken" by some really clueless campaign workers
Please - bring back the allegedly juvenile ads that moved the debate! Yes, it's true that only Lowry and I liked them when they first came out, but we were a lonely majority of two. I'll make a bold prediction - the above ad will not go viral. Here's the text:
Washington's broken. John McCain knows it. We're worse off than we were four years ago. Only McCain has taken on big tobacco, drug companies, fought corruption in both parties. He'll reform Wall Street, battle Big Oil, make America prosper again. He's the original maverick. One is ready to lead - McCain.
There's nothing there that Joe Klein will find scurrilous, so if that's the measure of success for these things then this spot is a smash. The vague vow to reform Wall Street is probably the ad's low point, although the reminder of McCain's determination to cripple the pharmaceuticals ranks a close second. Hint for the McCain campaign - if the electorate hungers for meaningless pledges of change, the other guy's the master of that particular game. Work your own side of the street, even if you get hit in the media for doing so. The best one can say about this "Broken" spot is that it will be forgotten before the ink on this blog post dries. The ad also belies the importance of the campaigns having lots of cash on hand. The Obama campaign decking out its campaign plane so it befits an airborne Sun King and the McCain campaign producing dreck like this are God's way of saying both campaigns have way too much money.
