THE WEEKLY STANDARD has learned that House Republicans are going to bring a bill to defund NPR to the floor next week. Colorado representative Doug Lamborn will be the sponsor.

The bill will do three things:

1) Prohibit direct federal funding of NPR (NPR now receives money from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, the Departments of Education and Commerce, and the NEA).

2) Prohibit the use of federal funds provided through CPB for the payment of dues by local radio stations to NPR.

3) Prohibit the use of federal funds provided through CPB for acquiring or producing programming (local stations could use federal funds from CPB for other purposes, but would have to produce or acquire content with non-federal funds).

The bill should pass the House. Will Senate Democrats be willing to block it? Will President Obama be willing to veto it? Could our long national nightmare of federally-funded, left-wing radio be over?
