On Tuesday, THE WEEKLY STANDARD first reported that an activist in Illinois tied to Senate candidate Alexi Giannoulias was working to recruit veterans to film a television ad attacking Senate candidate and 21-year Navy Reserve veteran Mark Kirk.

As it turns out, the Giannoulias activist seems to have been working with the Democratic Senate Campaign Committee, which unveiled its new TV spot this morning.

The ad, which uses unidentified veterans (if they really are veterans), is currently unlisted on YouTube – probably because the DSCC knows it is too outrageous to be made public.

As we noted, Kirk is endorsed over Giannoulias by the Veterans of Foreign Wars-PAC and the Combat Veterans for Congress.

While Giannoulias never served one day in uniform (save the basketball uniform he sported when he played over in a Greek league), Kirk’s Officer Fitness Report from his Iraq service calls him “one of the most combat-tested Aviation Intelligence Officers in the Naval Reserve.” The report goes on to say that Kirk “provided aircrew an in-depth understanding of the Iraqi Integrated Air Defense Systems within the Tactical Area of Responsibility (TAOR) for combat operations during Operation Northern Watch (ONW).”
