With a few, conspicuous exceptions – Lincoln, FDR – second inaugural addresses have been largely forgettable. And, for that matter, so have most first term inaugural addresses.

President Obama's first try is not quoted or referenced even by his fans and acolytes. Easy to understand why, given this passage:

...those of us who manage the public's dollars will be held to account, to spend wisely, reform bad habits.

Maybe he'll do better this time. And, even if he doesn't, there will be plenty of cheerleaders around to say he did.
