The two most impressive victories in GOP Senate primaries last night were by Joni Ernst, who swept to a huge win in Iowa, and Jeff Bell, who came from behind to win a close four-way contest in New Jersey. Both are pro-Main Street populist reform conservatives who will pose a real threat to their conventional liberal opponents. And both are veterans.
But there's one difference. Ernst is a 43-year-old veteran of the Iraq War. Bell is a 70-year-old Vietnam vet, who served in Vietnam before Ernst was born. So the voters can honor vets of both conflicts--and ensure appropriate generational diversity in the GOP caucus!--by electing both Bell and Ernst in November. We trust they'll enjoy swapping stories next year between votes on the floor of the Senate.
