Retiring Connecticut senator Joseph Lieberman, an independent Democrat, did not rule out supporting his friend from across the aisle, former Republican congressman Chris Shays, in the Senate race to replace himself.

"I don’t have any current plans to be involved, but Chris Shays and I have a very special, longtime relationship," said Lieberman in the Capitol Tuesday afternoon. "I have the greatest admiration for him. He’s a personal friend. So we’ll watch and see what happens." Shays is facing the GOP's 2010 Senate candidate, Linda McMahon, in the primary. Democratic congressman Chris Murphy currently leads in his primary race.
