Politico reports that the Club for Growth has bought television airtime in Indianapolis, Fort Wayne, and South Bend, Indiana to run ads against incumbent Republican senator Dick Lugar. The ad buy will be the first outside TV advertising for this race that'll help Lugar's Republican opponent, Richard Murdouck. The current buy is more than $273,000 over the next two weeks.
The news comes at the end of what Roll Call calls Lugar's "horrible, no good, very bad week," as the Indiana Republican tries to win a seventh term in the Senate. A PPP poll released on Monday showed Mourdock, Indiana's state treasurer, coming within six points of Lugar, a big gain for the conservative challenger.
And this morning, Lugar received a likely unwanted endorsement from former Pennsylvania senator Arlen Specter, who switched parties in 2010 after losing his own Republican primary. Here's Specter entreating a C-SPAN caller, a Hoosier named Daniel, to "vote for Dick Lugar":
