49 Dem Senators Voted for Bills Including D.C. Abortion Funding Ban

As reported earlier in this space, Harry Reid and President Obama say they won't support a bill that funds the government for one week and the troops for the rest of the fiscal year includes policy riders. But there's only one rider they seem to object to in the stopgap bill: the ban on taxpayer-funding for abortion in D.C.
President Clinton signed the ban into law six times. Obama signed it into law once, when the Democratic Congress included it in the FY2009 budget. And 49 Senate Democrats have voted for budgets that included the ban in the past.
Why are Democrats now insisting that there be no funding for the troops or the rest of the government unless tax dollars are used to pay directly for abortions?
The most logical explanation, it seems to me, is that they want the government to shutdown because they think it will hurt Republicans.
"If I was head of DNC, I would be quietly rooting for [a shutdown]," Howard Dean said recently.
So the Democrats either want a shutdown or they are now more in the thrall of the abortion lobby than ever before.
