Heath Druzin of Stars & Stripes reports that a member of the ISAF  (International Security Assistance Force):

… was killed when insurgents attacked a military base in a volatile region of eastern Afghanistan Saturday morning

Subsequent reporting by Toshio Suzuki of S&S identified the man as Sgt. 1st Class William K. Lacey:

… assigned to the 201st Brigade Support Battalion, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division at Fort Knox. This was his fifth deployment overall and second in Afghanistan, according to Fort Knox public affairs.

There are some 80,000 ISAF troops in Afghanistan, 50,000 of whom are Americans.  All are scheduled to be out of the country by year’s end.

Saturday’s casualty was the first ISAF combat loss of 2014.
