Alaska Republican Endorses Hawaii Democrat for Senate

Republican congressman Don Young of Alaska has crossed the aisle to endorse Democrat Mazie Hirono in the U.S. Senate race in Hawaii. "But here's what's important, Hawaii," Young says, sitting next to Hirono. "If you're looking for a United States senator who doesn't just talk about bipartisanship but actually knows how to work with both Republicans and Democrats to get things done, Mazie Hirono will be that senator." Watch the ad below:
Hirono, one of Hawaii's two House members, is running against former congressman Ed Case in the Democratic primary on August 11. The winner of that primary will likely face Republican Linda Lingle, the former two-term governor. Polls show Case would perform much better in the general election against Lingle than would Hirono.
So does that perhaps explain why Young, a Republican, is endorsing Hirono in the primary? Young spokesman Luke Miller says the endorsement is only for the Democratic primary. "Congressman Young made today's endorsement in an effort to help Congresswoman Hirono in her upcoming primary," Miller writes in an email. "Today's endorsement was strictly for the primary."
