Americans Petition For, Against Deportation of CNN Host Piers Morgan

"No one in the UK wants him back."

CNN host and British national Piers Morgan ginned up controversy earlier this month when he criticized American gun laws and berated a gun rights advocate in an on-air rant following the shooting massacre in Newtown, Connecticut. Since last Friday, nearly 75,000 Americans have signed an online petition to the Obama adminstration to have Morgan deported back to the United Kingdom, more than three times the number required for the White House to issue an official response. Now a new petition is up at the White House website asking the federal government to keep Morgan stateside.

"We want to keep Piers Morgan in the USA," the petition reads. "There are two very good reasons for this. Firstly, the first amendment. Second and the more important point. No one in the UK wants him back." Fewer than 1,000 people have signed this new petition since it was created Tuesday.

The second point about Morgan appears to be partially true. A third petition, this one in the U.K., has emerged asking the British government to keep Morgan out of his home country. “We got rid of him once and why should we have to suffer again. The Americans wanted him so they should put up with him. We washed our hands of him a long time ago,” the petition reads. This appears to have been prompted by this tweet from British TV host and automobile columnist Jeremy Clarkson, who has publicly feuded with Morgan in the past:
