The first hint came this weekend, when Joe Biden (careful as always) seemed to prematurely run his mouth about this decision to a Delaware political columnist.

Biden: “If you run into Beau, talk him into running; he respects you.”

Me: “I don’t think he wants to run, though.”

Biden: “I don’t think he does either. I know he doesn’t want to. … I’m so proud of the job he’s done [as attorney general].” …

The columnist's paper later retracted his reporting, and I'm betting that guy's steamed right about now. Because this is the news today:

"My first responsibilities are here in Delaware. I have a duty to fulfill as Attorney General -- and the immediate need to focus on a case of great consequence. And that is what I must do. Therefore I cannot and will not run for the United States Senate in 2010. I will run for reelection as Attorney General," Biden wrote in an email to supporters Monday morning.

The Brown Effect crushes Democrats' best hopes of retaining a Senate seat. Democrats will likely go with a county executive— Chris Coons—whom popular Republican Mike Castle beats handily in polls right now.
