Chicago Strike: Day Five

No settlement as of Friday morning.  But ...

The union called a meeting Friday afternoon of some 700 delegates who would be required to approve any contract settlement with a majority vote. The meeting could be used to present an agreement or merely to update union members on where the negotiations stand.

Meanwhile, Jesse Jackson is on hand (a huge relief to all) and he feels there is a "great sense of urgency," now whereas, earlier in the week, "the two sides were talking past each other."

David Brooks is also optimistic that when the dust has settled, "...then Chicago will move toward the forefront of the reform movement."

One can always hope and we shall see.  But this is Chicago and this is public education and this is an election year.  Not a recipe for enlightened governance.
