"Former President Bill Clinton is set to play a central part in the Democratic convention, aides said, and will formally place President Obama’s name into nomination by delivering a prime-time speech designed to present a forceful economic argument for why Mr. Obama deserves to win a second term," the New York Times reports.

The speech will reportedly be the evening of Wednesday, September 5, presumably during prime time. That is the same time of the opening game of the National Football League.

According to the NFL schedule, that Wednesday evening, the Dallas Cowboys will face off against the New York Giants.

"The 2012 season kicks off in rivalry fashion with the Cowboys visiting the defending champion Giants in the Meadowlands. What makes this kickoff game special is the fact that Big Blue eliminated Dallas in an NFC East winner-take-all affair on the final night of the 2011 regular season. Of course, the Packers hosting the 49ers at Lambeau could be a preview of the NFC Championship Game. A Monday night doubleheader is never a bad thing."

One wonders whether Clinton will have more viewers than the NFL's season opener, though there's little doubt the former president is a bigger draw than the current vice president (whose speaking slot Clinton was offered at the convention).
