The closely watched Consumer Confidence Index, which measures the American public's sentiments every month, sank six points to 65.1. That's a major turnaround since October, when it reached a four-year high of 73.1... the biggest drop to consumer confidence since the nation's credit rating was lowered in August of last year.

The good news, if there is any, is that first time claims declined. The number, however, may be something of a guess since “Claims in 19 states and territories were estimated because government office closures on Dec. 24 prevented a complete count, a Labor Department spokesman said as the figures were released.”

So many numbers, so little clarity.
