When interviewed by Lesley Stahl for 60 Minutes, national security advisor Susan Rice responded to one question with:

The situation in the Middle East is complicated. But to paint this with a broad brush and say it’s a disaster, I think, is missing a lot of important data points. 

Today, on the FP’s Passport, in a piece with the grisly title “Killing Mohammad Chatah,” David Kenner writes that as:

Chatah was killed when a car bomb blew apart his convoy, scattering twisted metal across the streets of downtown Beirut and leaving a plume of gray smoke over the city's skyline ... The Syrian war, which has long destabilized Lebanon's peripheries, has come to the heart of the Lebanese capital.
