The BlogDefense Authorization/'Don't Ask, Don't Tell' Repeal Bill Fails on Cloture Vote, 56-43 (Corrected)3:04 PM, Sep 21, 2010
• By JOHN MCCORMACK
Moments ago, the cloture vote on the Defense Authorization bill, which included a repeal of the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy on gays in the military and the DREAM Act, failed on what was almost a straight party-line vote. Forty Republican senators, including moderates Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins of Maine, voted against cutting off debate on the bill. (Lisa Murkowski missed the vote). ![]() Blanche Lincoln and Mark Pryor of Arkansas were the only Democrats to vote with the Republicans (if you don't count Harry Reid, who switched his vote to "no" as a procedural matter, so he can bring the bill up for a vote again). Lady Gaga has failed ... for now. Correction: I initially reported that Blanche Lincoln was the only Democrat to vote with the Republicans.
