Kate Marshall, a Democratic candidate in a special election in Nevada's Second Congressional District, recently decided to show support--by issuing a statement--for Israel. "I am proud to consider Israel a friend and I reiterate my unwavering support for its fundamental right to exist and the absolute necessity for Israel to secure its people from outside threats," Marshall's statement read. "I stand ready and willing to assist Israel in defending itself against all acts of terrorism."

It's a fine statement, to be sure. But could there possibly have been some motive behind her statement of support for an issue that hasn't at all been a factor in her or her opponent's campaign? Indeed, yes!

This is the very next paragraph in her campaign's email:

Background: Israel has been in the news lately, and will be even more in the news with Beck's "Rally to Restore Courage" in Jerusalem. In an R district, it will be useful to express support for Israel and demonstrate some foreign policy prowess while it is a timely topic - especially for people who are likely paying attention to Beck's event.

Hmm. So clearly Marshall thinks that supporting Israel will be politically beneficial. Democrats, such as DNC chief Debbie Wasserman Schultz, often make the argument that support for Israel should not be turned into a political issue. But this is proof that many on the Democratic side are doing just that.
