The public pillorying of the Israeli Ambassador in the parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee occurred only hours after Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki addressed the very same committee. Tory MEP Struan Stevenson protested Mottaki’s invitation to the committee, shouting “murderer” at him as he entered the parliament premises. We do not know how MEPs received Mottaki inside the chamber, since the meeting was held behind closed doors.

During the session with Curiel, however, Polish Socialist MEP Marek Siwiec revealed at least something about the earlier meeting with Mottaki. “Everyone’s unhappy,” Siwiec said about the Mavi Marmara incident, “The Israelis, the Turks. We’re unhappy. There’s only one person who is delighted with all this.” During the earlier session, Siwiec reported, the Iranian foreign minister had also been asked about the incident. On Siwiec’s account, Mottaki smiled the whole time while giving his response.
