Farewell to Feller

In one of the last interviews with Bob Feller before he died last week at the age of 92, the hall-of-famer said that, “trying to sneak a fastball by Ted Williams was like trying to sneak a sunbeam by a rooster.” The interview with Feller is part of the New York Times’s video feature “The Last Word,” a series also including legendary guitarist Les Paul, and JFK speechwriter (and, as Michael J. Birkner pointed out in our November 22 issue, Kennedy ghostwriter) Ted Sorensen. This week’s Scrapbook also pays tribute to Feller, one of the game’s greatest pitchers, who modestly described himself as “an American happy to be a ballplayer, and because of baseball being the national pastime it gave me a station in life which I no other way would have had.”
