At an event in Germany, President Obama said American youth lag behind their European counterparts because they are not taught "a second and third language." Via the pool report:
POTUS opened his remarks with "Guten Abend."
He thanked Merkel for her kind words and all Germans for the "incredibly warm welcome, both literally and figuratively."
"Your English is better than our German. I was just mentioning to the Chancellor that this is an area where the United States clearly is lagging behind, making sure that our young people learn a second and third language. "
He said he was giving his translators a break tonight though.
He recalled a contemporary account which said 1000 people fainted from excitement from Kennedy's "Ich bin ein Berliner" speech.
"We did not have 1000 people faint today. The few who did, did so because of the weather and not because of my speech. But like presidents before me …. I could not be more grateful for the incredible reception that we have received. I recognize this signifies the incredible friendship between our two countries.
