Concord, N.H.
At a campaign stop with student supporters this morning, Jon Huntsman knocked Mitt Romney’s record on jobs. “Governor Romney enjoys firing people, and I enjoy creating jobs,” he said.

Huntsman was referring to comments made by Romney earlier in the morning. “I want individuals to have their own insurance,” Romney said during a visit to the Nashua chamber of commerce. “That means the insurance company will have an incentive to keep you healthy. It also means if you don’t like what they do, you can fire them. I like being able to fire people who provide services to me. You know, if someone doesn’t give me a good service that I need, I want to say I’m going to go get someone else to provide that service to me.”

Asked specifically about the comments, Huntsman said they showed he is “slightly out of touch with the economic reality we have in America right now.”

But Romney seemed to be explaining his support for competitive markets and consumer freedom. I asked the Huntsman campaign if the former Utah governor was misrepresenting Romney by saying he “enjoys” firing people. Huntsman spokesman Tim Miller reiterated that the comments show Romney is “out of touch” on the issue of job creation.

But isn’t Romney talking about the benefits of free markets? Miller says the issue is also about electability in the general election. “President Obama is going to use [comments like these] against him,” Miller said.
