Jenny Sanford, the ex-wife of former South Carolina governor Mark Sanford, will not run for the Charleston-area open congressional seat in the upcoming special election. According to the Associated Press, Sanford, who divorced the governor after it was revealed he had been conducting an extramartial affair with a women in Argentina, told reporters Monday she would not seek the seat vacated by Tim Scott, the Republican who was appointed to the Senate after the resignation of Jim DeMint.

Mark Sanford is expected to announce his candidacy for the House seat this week, according to those close to him. While the prospect of the former spouses running against each other in the Republican primary titillated political observers, a source in South Carolina says it was highly unlikely one of the Sanfords would enter the race if the other chose to do so.

Mark Sanford held the seat from 1995 to 2001. In 2002, he was elected to his first term as governor and was reelected in 2006. Sanford's political career appeared over after he admitted to the extramarital affair in 2009.
