In a statement to THE WEEKLY STANDARD Monday, Democratic U.S. senator Joe Manchin of West Virginia said he's "supportive of the the principles" in the late-term abortion ban that passed his state's legislature by an overwhelming margin this weekend. Manchin did not say if he will vote for a similar piece of federal legislation that would prohibit most abortions during the final four months of pregnancy.

Manchin's full statement:

“I am pro-life and supportive of the principles in the bill that was just passed in the West Virginia Legislature. I am currently evaluating the constitutionality of the legislation and working with my colleagues to make sure we can pursue a bill that will pass the Senate. My main goal, and one that we can all agree on, is reducing the number of abortions in this country.”

Manchin is one of many Democrats in the U.S. Senate who hasn't taken a position a federal late-term abortion limit. Majority Leader Harry Reid has refused to bring the legislation, which passed the U.S. House in 2013, up for a vote.
