Senator John McCain called President Barack Obama’s 3-day bus tour through North Carolina and Virginia “a campaign trip” and said it was “unfortunate” that U.S. taxpayers are footing the bill.

Speaking with reporters at the Capitol this afternoon, McCain also criticized the president’s recent comments about the GOP jobs plan. The Arizona senator is leading the push for an alternative to the Democrats' American Jobs Act.

“I think it’s unfortunate that the president wouldn’t say, ‘Look, there’s areas we can agree on, and we should sit down and talk,’” said McCain. “Rather than taking a taxpayer-funded campaign trip to North Carolina and using it, on the taxpayer’s dime, as a platform to attack us.”

In North Carolina yesterday, Obama said the Republicans’ jobs plan calls for "dirtier air, dirtier water, [and] less [sic] people with health insurance."

McCain referenced a headline from a Washington Post story today that said the president was in “full campaign mode.”

“I don’t know how you can interpret his remarks and his activities in any other way,” McCain said. “But it’s a campaign and it’s unfortunate that he doesn’t spend campaign money instead of taxpayer money.”
