Al Franken, the first-term Democratic senator from Minnesota, is under 45 percent against 4 potential GOP challengers in a new poll. Suffolk University's poll of likely voters in Minnesota also found Franken with a 46 percent favorability rating, while 41 percent say they have an unfavorable opinion of him.

Against the four Republican candidates for Senate who have filed, Franken fails to poll better than 50 percent, including against the two leading candidates for the GOP nomination. Against both state senator Julianne Ortman (who leads among Republican voters with 14 percent) and businessman Mike McFadden (in second with 12 percent), Franken polls at 44 percent to the Republicans' 29 percent.

Both Ortman and McFadden remain largely unknown, with 59 percent saying they had never heard of Ortman and 62 percent saying the same about McFadden. Read the full poll results here.

Minnesota's primary is August 12.
