Politico reports on Rick Santorum's newest television ad: a light-hearted, humorous spot featuring a Mitt Romney double firing mud in vain at a cardboard cutout of Santorum. The ad, which doesn't rebut any of Romney's (or his super PAC's) criticisms, says that Romney's "negative attack machine" will "backfire" on the former Massachusetts governor. The voiceover also says Romney is "trying to hide from his big-government Romneycare" and his support for "job-killing cap and trade." Watch the video below:

The Santorum campaign tells Politico's Mike Allen that "everyone in Michigan" will see the ad.

Update: Christian Heinze points to Romney's appearance on Fox and Friends this morning, where he is shown the Santorum ad. "That's the nature of politics, in which you always accuse the other guy of what you've done yourself," Romney responded. "So my campaign hasn't run any negative ads against Rick Santorum."

He's right, technically, since it's Romney's super PAC, Restore Our Future, that has been running negative ads against Santorum. While the campaign and the super PAC can't actually collude, the Romney camp is nonetheless indicating loud and clear what it hopes the super PAC does with its ad time.
