David Jackson of USA Today reports that President Obama told an audience, yesterday, that Washington is out of touch and obsessed with politics. Or something like that. And that instead of focusing on things that are important to the average citizen, Washington is peddling:

“… phony scandals that are  ... all geared towards the next election or ginning up a base -- it's not on the level. And that must feel frustrating, and it makes people cynical and it makes people turned off from the idea that anything can get done.” Obama did not specify what he meant by "phony scandals.”

Perhaps he had in mind Veterans Affairs, whose executives cook the books while they pay themselves bonuses?

To be fair, in Washington where, by the way, the president lives and works and has for some years now, that probably does count as a phony scandal.
