You can read President Obama's letter to Congress on health care reform here. In it, he urges that Congress strip the Cornhusker Kickback and the Gator Aid from the bill. He also recommends four GOP ideas: (1) Sen. Coburn's "undercover patients" proposal to uncover waste, fraud, and abuse in Medicare; (2) spending $50 million more on pilot programs to limit malpractice abuse; (3) increasing doctor's reimbursements in Medicaid; and (4) protecting Health Savings Accounts.

Ed Morrissey has commentary here. The New York Times's David M. Herszenhorn writes that "Mr. Obama is laying the groundwork for Democrats to press ahead while showing that they have listened and even incorporated some Republican ideas." True enough. And for Obama to come out in support of HSAs is no small matter. But it is hard to see how any of these four elements entice House Democrats to flip their votes from No to Yes. Cold-hearted political calculation will determine how they vote in the end.
