Obama Signs Med Student's Coat: 'Go Obamacare!'

President Barack Obama praised his signature health care legislation in his own signature, the Des Moines Register reports. Obama autographed a University of Iowa medical student's lab coat with the phrase, "Go Obamacare!" after a rally in Iowa City Saturday. Here's more from the Register:

President Barack Obama, in Iowa City today for a campaign rally, took a black marker and wrote “Go Obamacare!” and signed his autograph, [medical student Shadee] Giurgius said.

Obamacare is the term opponents coined for the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, a controversial health care overhaul that Obama signed into law in 2010. To cut the number of uninsured Americans, it will require almost everyone to carry health insurance. The U.S. Supreme Court upheld the law, saying the so-called individual mandate is within Congress’s powers.

President Obama has taken to using the term "Obamacare" himself, even creating a page on his campaign website where supporters can sign a petition saying they "like Obamacare." But many Democrats, including Florida congresswoman and Democratic National Committee chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz, have said the term is "disparaging" and out of bounds, preferring to call it by its abbreviated official name, the Affordable Care Act.

Whatever it's called, Obamacare is still unpopular with the majority of Americans. The latest Rasmussen poll shows 50 percent of Americans support repealing the law, while 44 percent oppose repeal.
