President Obama felt the need to weigh in on the U.S. national soccer team, declaring, “We’re a middle-of-the-pack team. We’re not Germany yet. Or Italy or France, but — or Argentina or Brazil — but we're now in the mix.”

Italy, of course, failed to advance to the elimination round in this year’s World Cup.  The Italians lost to Uruguay and Costa Rica.  Meanwhile, the Americans beat Ghana, tied Portugal, and lost only to Germany (the #3-ranked team in the world in the Soccer Power Index) to defy international expectations and advance from the so-called “Group of Death.”

Oh, and the USA is now ranked #18 in the Soccer Power Index. Italy is #20.

Maybe Obama should stick to throwing out first pitches.  (Or maybe not.)
