An essential tactic in the shutdown is, it seems, to  deprive people of things that they need or badly want.  Make them pay.  And when their suffering is no longer bearable, they will come back, chastened and grateful for the blessings government bestows upon them … something like that, anyway.

And if you really want to hurt them, take away their tweets.  Thus, as nextgov.com reports:

Federal government Twitter accounts have been tweeting at about one-third their normal level since the government shut down … Federal agencies and officials post about 2.047 [about? ed.] during a normal weekday, but have been posting about 723 since the shutdown began ...
