Today, on Meet the Press, Paul Ryan responded to a question in which David Gregory asserted that the Medicare reforms proposed by the House are unpopular. Such assertions are regularly made by the press but are not backed up by a realistic look at the polls.  The American people have actually registered a split verdict on the proposed reforms so far, as they are much more concerned about deficits and debt than many inside-the-Beltway pundits seem to think. In response to Gregory, Ryan replied,

“If people are describing this accurately in polls, it is far more popular. More importantly, leaders are elected to lead. I don’t consult polls to tell me what my principles are or what our policies should be…. We are not seeing this kind of leadership from the President of the United States.”
