A new campaign poll released to Poitico shows Republican senator Dick Lugar of Indiana five points behind his primary challenger, state treasurer Richard Mourdock. In the Wenzel Strategies poll, conducted on behalf of the Mourdock campaign, 44 percent of those Hoosier Republicans surveyed said they support Mourdock in the May 8 primary, with 39 percent supporting Lugar. Seventeen percent of those polled were undecided, suggesting that the final days of the race will be hard fought.
Dick Lugar, Richard Mourdock
Another recent Mourdock-backed poll showed the candidate edging out Lugar, a six-term incumbent, 42 percent to 41 percent.
Throughout the campaign, Lugar has counted on support from the Republican establishment,as well as Indiana allies like Governor Mitch Daniels. Mourdock, meanwhile, has earned support from Tea Party groups as well as conservative organizations like the Club for Growth and the National Rifle Association.
Update: The Lugar campaign responds: "All along, the Mourdock campaign has been fueled by special interests from outside the State of Indiana - and this poll is just another example. Our internal polling shows Dick Lugar is, was and will remain in the lead. Our polling also shows Richard Mourdock's unfavorable ratings growing rapidly. The more Hoosiers learn about Mourdock, the less they trust him. At the end of the day, this race will be decided by Hoosiers and not by D.C.-based special interest polls."
