Restore Our Future, the pro-Mitt Romney super PAC, has released a new ad that will air in Michigan, Arizona, and Ohio. The ad portrays Santorum as a "big spender" and a "Washington insider," citing his voting record when he represented Pennsylvania in the Senate. Watch the ad below:

Included in the charges in the ad are Santorum's votes to "raise the debt limit five times" and his vote for the "Bridge to Nowhere." It's true: Santorum voted to raise the debt ceiling five times. But the practice was routine and hardly controversial at the time, even within the Republican party. In fact, a number of Romney supporters in the Senate, including John McCain, Norm Coleman, and Jim Talent, also voted for some or all of those debt limit increases. Few politicians, and certainly not Mitt Romney, were calling for freezing the debt limit increase at the time. Likewise, Romney surrogates supported many of those other projects, including the aforementioned Bridge to Nowhere and Medicare Part D.

Will the ad--and the strategy--help quash Santorum's surge ahead of the primaries in Michigan and Arizona on February 28? Perhaps. But it's worth noting that the charges laid out here have considerably less bite than those Restore Our Future included in ads against Newt Gingrich in both Iowa and Florida. The anti-Gingrich ads focused on his high-dollar consulting contracts with Freddie Mac and highlighted the global warming commercial Gingrich made with liberal Democrat Nancy Pelosi. The ad targeting Santorum, meanwhile, notes that he "voted to raise his own pay" and supported a bill with another despised Democrat, Hillary Clinton.
