Public Policy Polling hasn't yet completed its latest poll in South Carolina, but the pollster tweets that it's a tight race: "Gingrich and Romney basically running even on the first night of our South Carolina poll. No one else close."

Newt Gingrich

According to PPP, 60% of South Carolina voters watched Monday night's debate, which may be the reason that Santorum voters are flocking to Gingrich, while Romney is holding steady. About one week ago, PPP found Romney leading Gingrich 29% to 24% in South Carolina.

Other pollsters provide mixed results about what's going on in South Carolina. A Politico/Tarrance poll conducted January 17 and 18 finds Romney leading Gingrich 37% to 30%, while an Insider Advantage poll conducted January 18 finds Gingrich leading Romney 32% to 29%.
