South Carolina governor Nikki Haley will appoint Republican congressman Tim Scott to the U.S. Senate, the New York Times reports. Haley, the first-term Republican governor, is expected to make an announcement about her selection around noon in Columbia. CNN is also reporting that Scott has been selected.

Scott

Scott, who represents the coastal region of South Carolina that includes Charleston, was reelected in November to a second term in the House. He will be the only black Republican member of Congress in the next term, regardless of whether he remains in the House or is in fact appointed to the Senate. Scott would be replacing Republican Jim DeMint, who is resigning his Senate seat to take over as president of the Heritage Foundation, a conservative think tank based in Washington.

Scott would be the first black Republican senator since Edward Brooke, the Massachusetts Republican who left the Senate in 1979, and the only black senator serving in the 113th Congress.
