From RGIII to Joyce DiDonato

I'm as thrilled as every other red-blooded Washington-area resident by the Redskins' victory yesterday. Yes, I did "predict" a Cowboys victory on Fox News Sunday. But that was, as I said on the show, a prediction contrary to my hopes, and of course was really made in order to avert the evil eye (or, as I put it on the panel in a way more suitable for public consumption, because I err on the side of pessimism). So, Go 'Skins! And no more predictions.
I am however sticking with my prediction yesterday that the Met's production of Donizetti's Maria Stuarda will be the entertainment event of the year. Opening tonight, it will be shown in HD at theaters around the world on Saturday, January 19—a perfect diversion from inauguration weekend. The duo of superstar mezzo Joyce DiDonato, in the title role, and Elza van den Heever as Queen Elizabeth I in her Met debut, should be the Met's winning equivalent of the 'Skins' RGIII and Alfred Morris.
So January looks promising—in the sports and arts categories. In the real world … perhaps not so much. Or will the New Year bring pleasant surprises here too?
Regardless, happy New Year!
