Moments after Rick Santorum finished his speech announcing that he was suspending his presidential campaign, Mitt Romney issued a statement to "Congratulate Senator Santorum on the Campaign He Ran."

"Senator Santorum is an able and worthy competitor, and I congratulate him on the campaign he ran. He has proven himself to be an important voice in our party and in the nation," Romney said in the statement. "We both recognize that what is most important is putting the failures of the last three years behind us and setting America back on the path to prosperity."

Romney's statement signals an attempt by the frontrunner to begin to unify the Republican party around himself, just as the nominating process is coming to an effective end.

Candidates Newt Gingrich and Ron Paul remain in the race, but fall far behind in delegates and victories.
