Senate Dems Hit on Obamacare in New TV Ads

A free-market group has launched television ads in three states whose Democratic senators are up for reelection this year, targeting those senators for their support for Obamacare.
Americans for Prosperity released 30-second ads on Monday in New Hampshire, North Carolina, and Louisiana that criticize Democratic senators who voted for Obamacare in 2010 and are facing reelection for the first time since those votes.
In the New Hampshire ad, Senator Jeanne Shaheen is quoted repeating Politifact's "Lie of the Year" during the debate over Obamacare. "You can keep your insurance if you like it," she said. Watch the ad below:
Shaheen, who first won her seat in 2008 after defeating Republican senator John Sununu, appears to be relatively safe. The Cook Political Report, for example, rates her seat a likely Democratic hold. A few polls have shown former Massachusetts Republican senator Scott Brown within striking distance of Shaheen, however. Brown has not said whether he would run for the Senate in New Hampshire.
Meanwhile in North Carolina, voters will see an AFP ad featuring fellow citizen Sheila Salter, who said she was "shocked" when she found out her health care policy was cancelled. Salter criticized incumbent senator Kay Hagan, a Democrat, for also promising that Americans could keep their insurance plan if they liked it
"Kay Hagan told us if you like your insurance plan and your doctors, you could keep them," says Salter in her Carolina drawl. "That just wasn't true. Now I have a temporary policy that cost me twenty percent more. Next year under Obamacare, my costs go up another $4500."
Salter adds, "Kay Hagan, she just doesn't get it." Watch the ad below:
Hagan is in much bigger trouble for her reelection effort, with several potential GOP challengers polling closely and the Cook Political Report concluding her seat "leans" Democratic.
Finally, in Louisiana, Democrat Mary Landrieu holds one of the most hotly contested Senate seats in the midterm elections. The new ad ties Landrieu to President Obama, who is very unpopular in the state, as well as reminding voters of Landrieu's defense of Obamacare during the debate four years ago.
"Those individuals who like the coverage they already have will be able to keep their current plan," Landrieu said. "This is a very accurate description of this bill." Watch the ad below:
Cook also rates the race in Louisiana as one that "leans" Democratic, and while GOP House member Bill Cassidy currently leads the pack as Landrieu's toughest threat, entries by other Republicans may threaten the party's ability to take back the seat. (Louisiana holds an open primary on Election Day in which all candidates run against each other. If no candidate breaks 50 percent, the top two vote-getters proceed to a runoff.)
AFP says the ads will run in "major media markets" in their respective states over the next three weeks. The group has already launched similar ads targeting Democratic House members in swing districts for their support for Obamacare.
