Shoot More, the Government's Paying

The headline on a press release from the Vermont Department of Fish & Wildlife reads:

$40,000 in Grant Money Remains Available for Shooting Ranges

The money, according to the release, comes from:

...  the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s Wildlife & Sport Fish Restoration Program and are derived from Federal excise taxes on hunting, shooting and fishing equipment. This is a 75 percent reimbursement grant program and requires a 25 percent non-federal match from the grant recipient. This can come through “in-kind” match, such as volunteer labor and donated equipment or cash. 

The promotion of firearms safety and proficiency is a worthy thing. The machinery for subsidizing it ... not so much.

Let the NRA and other private organizations raise and distribute the money, create the safety programs and conduct the instruction. The government has better things to do and to spend its money (what little it has) on.
