When Senator Rand Paul audits the Federal Reserve next year, I sure hope he takes a look at its art collection.

Don't worry if you were unaware of the collection's existence. I didn't know about it either until last week, when I came across a reference to the Fed Gallery in, of all places, Capitol File magazine. The Fed's holdings, it turns out, include more than 400 works. Imagine how much depreciated currency that must be worth!

Chairman Bernanke, if you want to restore the public's trust in the Federal Reserve, sell the art collection and devote the earnings to reducing the deficit. It won't plug the hole. But it would be an admirable gesture.
