MoveOn Smears Romney's Abortion Views: 'Send[ing] Women Back to the Back Alley'

A new ad from the liberal smear group MoveOn distorts Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney's views on abortion.
"Only decades ago women suffered through horrifying back alley abortions, or they used dangerous methods when they had no other recourse," says a new MoveOn ad. "So when the Republican Party officially promotes forcing rape victims to bear the children of their attackers as part of its assault against a woman's right to choose--we had to ask: Why is Romney & Ryan's GOP trying to send women back to the back alley?"
But Romney has clearly stated that he believes abortion should be legal in cases of "rape, incest, or to save the life of the mother." As Romney wrote earlier this summer in an op-ed, "I am pro-life and believe that abortion should be limited to only instances of rape, incest, or to save the life of the mother."
In the past, President Obama has closely associated himself with MoveOn.
"I think MoveOn provides a structure and the capacity for people to get engaged and involved in the issues that impact each and every one of us every day, and so I am just proud to be affiliated with what you do and keep it up, keep it up," Obama said in 2006, in a speech he delivered at Georgetown University as a senator from Illinois.
In 2008, after receiving MoveOn's endorsment, Obama again praised the left-wing group.
"From their principled opposition to the Iraq war ... to their strong support for a number of progressive causes, MoveOn shows what Americans can achieve when we come together in a grassroots movement for change. I thank them for their support and look forward to working with their members in the weeks and months ahead," Obama said in a press release then.
And MoveOn has so far spent at least $577,507 to oppose Romney, according to OpenSecrets.org, as well as $5,400 in direct support of Obama.
So, with MoveOn's latest smear against Romney, the question is: will President Obama and his campaign repudiate this false claim?
