A new poll released by the David Dewhurst campaign shows the lieutenant governor of Texas 8 points ahead of his Senate primary opponent Ted Cruz. Fifty percent of Republican primary voters in Texas support Dewhurst, while 42 percent are for Cruz. Last week, however, the Cruz campaign released its own poll showing Cruz leading Dewhurst, 49 percent to 40 percent.

Dewhurst and Cruz came in first and second place, respectively, in the May 29 GOP primary but were forced into a runoff election, which is on July 31, just two and a half weeks away. Dewhurst is the favorite to win, but enthusiasm among the conservative base could help put Cruz over the line in what's expected to be a low turnout election.
