First time claims were "unexpectedly" low, as Alex Kowalski & Shobhana Chandra of Bloomberg report, dropping to “the lowest level in more than five years.”

Yesterday's bad news indicated that employers are not hiring.  Today, the good news is they appear not to be firing, either, but are “confident their staff levels can adequately meet current demand. Even so, without a pickup in economic growth, the same companies may be reluctant to hire more workers in coming months.”

Another number and, perhaps, another surprise tomorrow.  Stay tuned.
