On CBS this morning, New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg made the case that handguns are more deadly than "assault weapons."
"The truth of the matter is, only about 400 people a year get killed with 'assault weapons' or high-capacity magazines," said Bloomberg, a big proponent of gun control. "That is 400 too many, and they're all tragedies, but you compare that to handguns--pistols this year are going to kill 12,000 Americans. And 19,000 Americans are going to commit suicide with handguns."
Bloomberg brought these numbers up to make the case for stricter background checks on gun buyers.
Senator Dianne Feinstein of California will introduce an "assault weapons" ban today on Capitol Hill. Yesterday, Feinstein touted the announcement on Twitter:
Tomorrow I will introduce my assault weapons legislation. Weapons of war do not belong on our streets. #AWB2013
