But the truth is, the question would be relevant regardless of the storm. For more than three decades, incumbent presidents have resisted campaigning during the opposing party's convention--no matter what party the president was a member of.

The Republican side of the campaign (a joint effort between Mitt Romney and the Republican National Committee) raised a total of $101.3 million dollars, and has $185.9 million in the bank. Meanwhile, the joint effort of President Obama and the Democratic National Committee raised $75 million and has $95.8 million in the bank.

"If there was a flash point, it came in March, according to three people close to the situation," writes Thrush. "Axelrod got wind that a producer at a network morning show had been asking for him to appear – only to be told by a junior staffer that Cutter, who had been conspicuously upping her TV appearances, could substitute."

In an email back to Messina, Rhoades writes, "If Governor Romney’s tax returns are the core message of your campaign, there will be ample time for President Obama to discuss them over the next 81 days."

Read more... 12:35 PM, Jul 21, 2012 • By DANIEL HALPERAccording to disclosure forms with the Federal Election Commission, President Obama's reelection team appears to have paid $92,751.50 to rent the Ohio State University's Jerome Schottenstein Center, the site of the campaign's much touted kick-off event in May.

The disclosure appears on records of the campaign's June spending, though the event took place May 5. And of course does not include other costs associated with the event; only the cost of renting the arena.
