National Review's Brian Bolduc gets a coveted interview with Jimmy McMillan, the the star of last night's New York gubernatorial debate and leader of "Rent Is Too Damn High" party:

McMillan refuses to speak ill of his rivals, Carl Paladino and Andrew Cuomo. A veteran of the Vietnam War, McMillan says Paladino “is my brother because he was a captain in the United States Army for five years. I would never say anything negative about him. He told me his credentials backstage before the debate. I didn’t know. I wanted to eat him up. But now he’s my brother.”

McMillan on Reagan:

A sense of humor is the sharpest of political weapons and for McMillan, no one wielded it better than Reagan. “Obama has almost got it, but Ronald Reagan perfected it,” he says. “I love him to death.”

Carl Paladino should be kicking himself—or firing whoever’s been giving him political advice. The Buffalo businessman vying for New York’s governorship this election, now better known in the New York Post as “crazy Carl,” is running a confused, undisciplined campaign. Paladino has drawn national attention for all the wrong reasons: comments he’s made about homosexuals that many found offensive, physically threatening a reporter who he thought was getting too close to a child he had with a woman out of wedlock, and insinuating that his opponent, Democrat Andrew Cuomo, is having an affair without providing any actual evidence.

Two recent polls show Democrat Andrew Cuomo leading Republican Carl Paladino by less than 10 points. But while several other recent polls in the race for New York's governor show a wider spread (the RealClearPolitics average is 16.6 percent, with Cuomo taking the lead in every single one), what was thought of as a run-away election for Cuomo just might be a little bit tighter than practically everyone thought.

And don’t forget the congressional races.

Everyone’s talking about the competitive governor’s and senate races in New York, with Carl Paladino surging against Andrew Cuomo and Joe DioGuardi pulling close to Kirsten Gillibrand. Given the nature of this year’s political environment, and Cuomo’s and Gillibrand’s weaknesses (see Hot Air’s analysis here), and given that voters only began to focus on the general election choice after last week’s primary, people shouldn’t be as surprised as they are that these two races now look to be very competitive.
