One of the world’s last Communist regimes may be about to unravel. But unlike the 1989-1991 fall of the Soviet Union and its Warsaw Pact puppet states in Central and Eastern Europe, the collapse of North Korea could have far-reaching and destructive aftershocks. Moreover, there is little evidence that any of the major powers that will be affected are prepared for—or even want to acknowledge the possibility of—what comes next.

In response to press reports that North Korean leader Kim Jong Il died, the White House issued a statement on December 18th that said, “we remain committed to stability on the Korean peninsula, and to the freedom and security of our allies.” So, with the North Korean regime at perhaps its weakest point in decades, the Obama administration’s inclination is to maintain the status quo—or, in their words, “stability.”

“A senior Korean military commander has been arrested on suspicion of leaking the South’s military defense plans to Kim Jong Il’s regime,” reports The Australian. “The major general, identified only as Kim, arrested by military authorities yesterday, faces charges of supplying confidential information to North Korea.”

Kim Jong Il is reportedly back in Pyongyang after concluding an unofficial, semi-secret trip to China last week. After spending a couple of days in the northern Chinese industrial city of Dalian, where he reportedly drove around in a $400,000 Maybach limousine and stayed at a 5-star hotel, he traveled to Beijing to party with his fellow travelers on the Communist road. State-run television showed the diminutive Dear Leader, resplendent as always in olive green zipper jacket and matching pants, kissing, hugging and toasting (Kim Jong Il is reported to favor expensive Bordeaux wine) Chinese President Hu, but commentators also noted that Kim appeared to have lost weight and a substantial portion of his infamous pompadour hair style.
