Democratic National Committee chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz has recently been going around her home state of Florida trying to convince Jews that Barack Obama is in fact pro-Israel. As the Sun-Sentinel reports, “Democrats hope to avoid losing Jewish voters in South Florida.”
Last week, Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, D-Weston, chairwoman of the Democratic National Committee, held three South Florida town hall meetings aimed at countering the notion that President Barack Obama is hostile to Israel and doesn't deserve the support of Jewish voters in next year's election. More are planned.
Wasserman Schultz emphasized her own background as a Jewish woman with a passionate concern for Israel. She said the goals of the Democratic Party and Obama, on issues such as health care, education and civil liberties, fit in the Jewish tradition of tikkun olam, or repairing the world to make it a better place. Then she returned to the subject of Israel.
Wasserman Schultz even announced that she has "looked into" to Obama’s kishka. (Kishka is a Yiddish word meaning intestines.) “As Jews, we really care about what's in your kishkas,” the DNC chair said at a recent event. “We want to look into someone's heart and know where they stand and that they stand with us. And I've looked into Barack Obama's heart and his kishkas. I know that he feels the issues that are important to us… I've seen what's in his kishkas, and I know that this is a mensch [a good person] that we have in the White House.”
The problem is obvious: Even as Wasserman Schultz is campaigning in Florida, arguing that Obama is, contrary to popular belief, a friend of Israel, the president is trash talking the leader of the Jewish state with his French counterpart Nicolas Sarkozy.
"I cannot bear Netanyahu, he's a liar," Sarkozy lamented to President Obama at the recent G20 meeting in France. Obama, apparently agreeing with his French counterpart, responded: "You're fed up, but I have to deal with him every day."
Perhaps Wasserman Schultz did not look deep enough into Obama’s kishka.
